5 Axis CNC Machining

5 Axis Machining

With state-of-the-art equipment, Hanstar provides CNC machining services to customers worldwide, including milling, turning, turn-mill combination, grinding and surface treatment etc.. Utilizing imported 3, 4 and 5 axis CNC machining centers, CNC lathes, and grinders to manufacture a range of metal and plastic parts for clients.

What is 5-axis CNC machining?

CNC (Computer Numerical Control) machining is a method of removing material with high-speed precision machines that use a variety of cutting tools to create the final design. In order to successfully fabricate a part on a CNC machine, the program determines the movement of the tool. The programming instructions are provided to the CNC machine tool and coded using CAM (Computer Aided Manufacturing) software and CAD (Computer Aided Design) files uploaded to the Hanstar quote page.

The "5-axis" means that the cutting tool can enter the part from five directions, allowing for more movement and rotation. 5-axis tables are achieved by adding tilt and rotation to the work holding table or to the tool spindle itself. By using the 5th axis, machinists can process up to 5 faces in a single operation, enabling the machining process to be both accurate and efficient. The 5-axis machine is most appropriate for parts that require complex motion or where GD&T datums and functions benefit from minimal setup. Most CNC parts require the machining of 5 faces, so this process is becoming increasingly common and valuable in the manufacture of impellers, blades, marine propellers, heavy generator rotors, turbine rotors, and large diesel engine crankshafts. Currently, 5-axis simultaneous machining and "3+2" machining are widely used in the market.

Advantages of Hanstar 5-axis CNC machining

  • Machining of complicated shaped parts
The main advantage of 5-axis machining is to enable the machining of complex shapes. The additional movement creates machining angles and arcs that previously could only be achieved with many special fixtures or additional setups. Now our five axes can easily achieve this function.
  • Low machining cost
Through the movement of the pendulum table or pendulum axis and the utilization of the flat bottom end milling cutter on the mold processing, each surface is processed by keeping the tool axis perpendicular to the processing end face, which can reduce the machining cost and processing time.
  • Small positioning error and high accuracy of machined surface
The 5-axis machining center can mill the angled side. During machining, ribbing caused by the angled side of the ball end end mill can be avoided. Five-axis machining makes it easy to achieve the desired surface of the workpiece, avoiding problems such as positioning errors and non-overlapping datum surfaces of conventional machines.
  • 3+2 axis machining
In 3+2-axis machining, the fourth and fifth axes are used for positioning the workpiece in a fixed position. In these scenarios, it is not necessary for all five axes to move simultaneously. For parts with features or holes in multiple faces or angles, 3+2 machining is the clear choice.
  • One-time clamping and less time-consuming
The 3-axis machining center can only accomplish the machining of deep cavity molds by adding long tools and toolholders. But now, when processing the mold, our five-axis CNC machining center is able to clamp at one time.
  • Better surface finish
By using 5-axis capabilities on contour geometries, better surface finish can be achieved.
We currently offer 5-axis machining services at Hanstar. Contact us to discuss your upcoming 5-axis or CNC machining projects, or submit an online RFQ here.
