What Is 5-Axis CNC Machining?
5-axis CNC machining is a subtractive manufacturing process in which a cutting tool moves along five axes simultaneously — three linear (X, Y, Z) and two rotational — to machine complex surfaces in a single setup, without re-clamping the part.
A 3-axis machine can only reach a workpiece from one direction at a time; machining the second face means stopping, re-fixturing and re-aligning the part, which introduces error. A 5-axis machine rotates the workpiece and tilts the tool so the cutter can reach undercuts, compound angles and curved surfaces in one pass. The result: better accuracy across multiple faces, fewer fixtures, less handling and a shorter lead time on complex parts.

What tolerance can 5-axis CNC machining hold?
Up to ±0.002 mm
How large a part can your 5-axis machines handle?
Our larger Hermle centers machine workpieces up to 1.2 m in diameter. Send us your part size — we’ll confirm fit on the first reply.
Is 5-axis machining always more expensive than 3-axis?
In most cases, yes — and we won’t pretend otherwise. 3-axis has a lower hourly rate, so when a part can be machined well on 3-axis, that’s the cheaper choice. 5-axis costs more per hour because it can produce geometry, tolerance and finish that 3-axis physically cannot. We quote the process your print actually needs — and tell you honestly which one that is.
Can you machine titanium and Inconel?
Yes. Titanium Grade 2/5, Inconel 625/718 and other high-temperature alloys, controlled to AMS/ASTM specifications for aerospace work.
What files do you need for a 5-axis quote?
STEP, IGES, Parasolid or native CAD files, plus a 2D print with tolerances if you have one. DFM review and process recommendation are free.
Do you have a minimum order quantity?
No. We accept orders starting from 1 piece — single prototype to full production run.
What quality documents do you provide?
Inspection reports, First Article Inspection (FAI), Certificate of Conformance (CoC) and Production Part Approval Process (PPAP) where your program requires it.
